Winter Coop Upgrades That Made All the Difference

This winter hit hard — record lows, ice storms, the whole deal. But our chickens sailed through it, and a lot of that credit goes to the coop upgrades we did last fall.

Ventilation Without Drafts

This is the number one thing people get wrong with winter coops. You need ventilation (moisture is the enemy, not cold), but you cannot have drafts at roost level. We added adjustable vents near the roofline that we can open and close depending on conditions. Game changer.

Deep Litter Method

Instead of cleaning the coop weekly in winter, we switched to the deep litter method. Start with a thick layer of pine shavings, then add fresh shavings on top as needed. The decomposing litter generates gentle heat and the chickens love scratching through it. By spring, you have a coop full of pre-compost.

Heated Waterer

Frozen water is a daily battle in winter. We invested in a heated base for our galvanized waterer — it keeps the water just above freezing. Worth every penny when the alternative is hauling fresh water out three times a day.

Extra Roost Space

Cold chickens need to fluff up, and fluffed-up chickens need more space on the roost. We added a second roost bar with wide, flat boards (2x4 with the wide side up) so they can cover their feet completely with their feathers.

The Results

Egg production only dipped about 20% this winter, compared to nearly stopping last year. The chickens looked healthier, their combs stayed a good color, and we did not lose a single bird. Preparation pays off.
